First off, I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year. As for the new mention, I discovered this one as I was waiting to board my delayed flight to London on the 23rd of December. A bright spot in a foggy, frustrating evening. This mention comes from the blog Guiri Girl in Barcelona, filed under the category useful stuff.
For those of you who may not know the term “guiri” is used by the locals here in Barcelona to describe the foreign tourists and residents. somewhat akin to the term “gringo” in Mexico, or “gaijin” in Japan. But why “guiri”? From what I’ve heard, “guiri” is the way the locals hear the words “Where is…”, as in “Where is the ramblas,” or “Where is the Sagrada Familia,” etc. I’ve been told that after 8 years and gaining near fluency in Catalan that I can no longer consider myself “guiri”, but I’ll always be an expat, not such a bad label in my opinion.
Coming soon: a few images from my trip to NYC.
